Cultivating Heritage: Higher Learning's Role in South African Traditional Music by Nizole Qete

The evolution of our musical landscape reflects the shifting rhythms of our cultural identity. Over the years, our musical preferences have shifted, prompting a closer look at the profound impact on our cultural evolution. The incorporation of indigenous music by institutions of higher learning helps us better understand and enjoy the sounds that were once mainly heard during important traditional events, such as funerals and weddings. This inclusion in education curriculums has a strong influence on how we value and connect with these cultural melodies.

Adding indigenous music to our school lessons is super important. It helps keep these special sounds alive, not just during ceremonies but also in our everyday lives through education. Think of it as a bridge connecting the past and present.

To better understand South African traditional music, I focused on music instruments. I did a survey with different people, including students, teachers, and music lovers. This survey, done with 16 number of participants, looked at how the responders encountered indigenous instruments. It gave me a better idea of how education shapes our cultural identity.

Education isn't just about sharing facts; it's like a spark that makes us curious. Learning about indigenous instruments is like taking a journey, connecting us to the rich stories in traditional music. The classroom becomes a starting point, inspiring us to explore and listen to these ancient melodies, making us feel more connected to our roots.

Now, armed with knowledge, young people are becoming storytellers in the digital world. Social media lets them share traditional songs, creating an online collection that goes beyond physical borders. These shared experiences aren't just digital posts; they're a living proof of the lasting power of South African indigenous music.

As young people explore indigenous instruments, they become the messengers of our cultural heritage. Passing down music to the next generation isn't just about teaching—it's storytelling. Memories tied to these traditional melodies become stories shared with future generations, making sure South African traditional music continues to thrive.

In the effort to preserve South African traditional music, education becomes a guiding light. By putting indigenous music into school lessons, we don't just learn about the instruments; we embark on a journey that helps us feel deeply connected to our roots. The melodies of the past, carried by young people into the digital world, become a living legacy—a proof of the lasting spirit of South African traditional music.
